Saturday, March 9, 2019 Hike Announcement

The River-to-River Trail Society announces its first guided hikes of the Spring, 2019 hiking season, on Saturday, March 9, 2019. Both hikes are free and open to the public.

Hike number one will meet at the New Simpson-Tunnel Hill School on Route 45, between Ozark and Vienna, Illinois, at 10:00 a.m.. This hike will follow Cedar Creek past four waterfalls: Indian Falls, Little Falls, an unnamed double waterfall, and Cedar Falls, also known as Ondessonk Falls. Part of the hike will cross private property, with the permission of the landowner.  This is a hike of moderate difficulty, of about four and a third miles in length, and is intended for hikers in good physical condition, who have done some hiking. Boots or sturdy shoes and hiking sticks are strongly recommended. Hikers should bring their own water and a snack. No dogs, please.

Hike number two is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. the same day at Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge. It will not be possible to take part in both hikes  Because space is limited, hikers for the Crab Orchard hike must register in advance by calling (630) 470-7692. This hike will visit five cemeteries in the closed section of the Refuge: Hess-Cole Cemetery, Grassy Creek Cemetery, Ogden-Wiley Cemetery, Craig Cemetery, and Hampton Cemetery. Transportation between the cemeteries will be by vehicle, but four must be reached on foot by walking over rough ground. Boots or sturdy shoes are recommended. Hikers should bring their own water. No dogs, please.
